In generation long past most family members and friends lived only a few miles or even a few blocks of each other. You were able to interact with all of your new friends and extended family daily. Today, that's not the case. Its not unusual for them to be hundreds of miles between relatives/friends and months between phone calls and letters. Staying united as a family is not easy. Your home computer/laptops/cellphones can make keeping in touch a little bit easier.
